Abstract

567,931. Discharging coke ovens. COLVILLES, Ltd., and TODD, D. Sept. 7, 1943, No. 14683. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] In coke oven plant having a discharging ram and a coke guide movable along opposite sides of the oven battery, the coke guide carries a contact member connected electrically to the ram-operating system in such a manner that, if the guide is subjected, due to incorrect positioning, to impact by the coke being discharged, the contact member is displaced and operates a switch to cut off the power to the ram. As shown, the contact member comprises an inverted pendulum 1 having an arbor 25 and a weight 26 at its upper end, the device being adapted to be set, by the coke guide operator, in an unstable position in which it rests against a stop 29 and from which, if the guide is incorrectly positioned ,and is fouled by the coke, it is displaced to the stable position shown in dotted lines. In the unstable position, the member 1 closes a switch to make power available for the ram and opens a switch in a circuit supplying power to the guide machine, thus rendering further movement thereof impossible, while when displaced to the stable position, it operates a switch to cut off the power to the ram. The electric circuits are described in detail and include a circuit, controlled by a switch actuated manually by the guide machine operator, for energizing a signal lamp on the ram machine to indicate that all is in readiness for the ramming operation and that power therefor is available.
