Abstract

567,249. Making pipes. STEVENS, A. H. (Chicago Metal Hose Corporation). June 22, 1943, No. 10056. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXVIII] Welding.-The end of the metallic braid covering a metal hose is secured to the coupling connection by arranging the parts between a pair of roller electrodes which are moved relatively circumferentially of the braid to produce a circular seam resistance weld between the braid and fitting, and simultaneously to weld together the individual braid fibres to produce a rigid braid sleeve-like portion. The braid 15 may be welded at 76, Fig. 7, to the fitting 50 and the loose ends trimmed off or welding may be effected right at the end of the braid. The braid may be surrounded by a sleeve which may be welded thereto when the braid is being welded to the fitting. If desired, in this case the braid may first be spot or seam welded to the fitting. The sleeve may be applied in the form of a thin stainless-steel ribbon 54 which may be deformed to localize the area of contact or as a machined cylindrical sleeve 80, Fig. 8, which may be polygonally shaped at 81 to receive a wrench and have a pair of welding surfaces 83, 84 of limited width to localize the welding areas. The braided hose may be passed through a bracket 13, the fitting 50 to which the flexible corrugated metal tube 14 is fixed by welding &c. passing over a roller electrode 33 which cooperates with a roller electrode 20 adjustable vertically by rack 17 and handoperated pinion. The electrode 33 is mounted on a shaft 32 rotated by bevel gear from a shaft 36 driven through a pedal-operated clutch by a belt 40 from an electric motor 39. The electrode shaft 32 carries a gear 55 connected by a train of gears and clutch with a shaft 58 which drives a pair of feed rolls 65 for feeding the ribbon strip 54 and through gearing drives a pair of rotary cutters 66 for cutting the ribbon to length.
