Abstract

567,195. Telemetering. SIGMA INSTRUMENT CO., Ltd., LOXHAM, J., and BOOSEY, F. R. Aug. 31, 1943, No. 14221. Addition to 557,782. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVI] In the automatic integrator claimed in the parent Specification, the driving electromagnet coils are each made up of two exactly equal windings C, D and E, F connected with differential control resistances R1, R2 so that one winding opposes the magnetomotive force of the other. Rotation of the disc RO is transmitted by gearing to counters H, G registering revolutions in opposite directions. The brake magnet BM may be an electromagnet connected to the same source of supply as the driving magnets M1, M2. Assuming that it is desired to measure the amount by which the calorific value of a given quantity of gas differs from the required value, the contact A of the resistance R1 is connected to the pen mechanism of a calorimeter so that it is in its central position when the calorific value is normal. The coils C, D then neutralize one another and no flux is produced by the magnet M1. The contact B of the resistance R2 is connected to a flow gauge and is in its central position for zero flow. The disc RO rotates at a speed proportional to the product of the factors. The counters may be provided with shutters which obscure the reading when the counter is running backwards and passes through zero. Switches J are arranged so that they close only when the counters indicate zero, the numeral discs being profiled to permit this. The switches are all connected in series so that any one disc moving off zero breaks the circuit. They are connected in circuit with associated apparatus such as an automatic proportioning device which should be temporarily inoperative when the integration is off zero. One or more further coils may be added on either of the driving magnets to give the algebraic summation of a plurality of variables as well as the product of the resultant with other variables. Specification 549,249, [Group XXXV], is referred to.
