Abstract
566,269. Radiographic packs. DIMSDALE, W. H., and CLARKE, A. E. July 27, 1943, No. 12202. [Class 98 (i)] A sensitive pack for use in detecting and estimating quantities of X- radiation or gamma - radiation, and which permits the effects of such radiation to be distinguished in the developed radiograph from the natural fog density of the sensitive element, comprises a photographic sensitive sheet enclosed in a light-tight package together with a metal mask or masks covering part only of the sensitive sheet and having metal areas of different permeability to the radiation, one area being substantially impermeable thereto. Instead of including the mask or masks in a light-sensitive pack, a cardboard or like cassette containing them may be adapted to receive a packet of film such as a conventional dental radiographic pack. The assembly may be as shown in Fig. 2, wherein a sensitive sheet 1 between sheets of black paper 2 has the mask 3 folded around one edge, and is enclosed in a light-tight paper wrapper 5 having a protective paper sheet 4 and a paper cover sheet 6 which may serve as a label. The sheets 4, 6 may be slit so that on bending the assembly a tab is formed to facilitate tearing off the wrapping, as described in Specification 423,809. The wrapper 5 and sheet 4 may be water-resistant. The mask may be a metal sheet of continuously-varying thickness, or having areas of different thickness, e.g. lead foil folded to provide such areas as shown in Fig. 5 ; or a metal sheet comprising areas of different metals ; or juxtaposed sheets of different metals. It may be located on one face only of the sensitive sheet; or be folded around an edge to make contact with both faces ; or a mask may be provided on each face, the two being in register or not. Two masks made of different metals may be provided, on the same or on opposite sides of the sensitive sheet, one (e.g. of lead) having a low and the other (e.g. copper or brass) having a higher permeability to the radiation. The sensitive sheet may be coated with emulsion on one or both sides. A duplex pack is described comprising two masked sensitive sheets separated by an impermeable metal foil so that the sheets may be exposed separately to the radiation from opposite sides of the pack.
