Abstract

565,765. Furniture adjustments. MORTIMER, A. J., and LEABANK CHAIRS, Ltd. May 21, 1943, No. 8116. [Class 44] [Also in Group XIV] Relates to tables, chairs or similar furniture wherein the table top, seat or the like is carried by a central pillar 1 rotatable and slidable within an outer pillar 2 to which the central pillar may be locked in the adjusted position by a clutch of the roller and inclined plane type. According to the invention, the rollers 6 of the clutch are housed in a cage 11, 13 with radial slots 12. As applied to a chair, the central pillar 1 carries the seat and has attached thereto a frustroconical member 3 pressing the rollers 6 against the inner surface of the outer pillar 2 to lock the two pillars together. The cage is normally pulled upwards by a spring acting on a central release rod 7 as described in Specification 337,535, [Class 52 (iii)]. The rollers 6 are shaped to conform to the inside of the outer pillar 2 so as to give line contact therewith.
