Abstract

565,019. Chuck-operating mechanism. BAIGENT, G. M. Aug. 21, 1942, No. 11828. [Class 83 (iii)] In chuck-operating mechanism for machine tools, such as lathes, a collet 10 in a hollow spindle 11 is actuated by a draw-spindle 12 having a grooved collar 16 co-operating with a shoe 15 on a lever 13. A compression spring 17 normally presses the lever to chuck-closing position and opening is effected by a shoulder 19 on a reciprocable rod 20 engaging a dog 18 on the lever. In operation, a tube 25 secured to the rod 20 is engaged by the head of a stop 27 on the turret stop-plate 26 when the turret is fed forwards by hand and the rod then moves forward with the turret. When the dog 18 -and shoulder 19 engage, the chuck is opened and the bar-stock is fed forward in conventional manner against a work stop on the turret, which pushes it back until the required length projects from the chuck, and as the turret comes to rest the dog 18 is released from the shoulder 19 by an incline 21 on the rod 20 riding on a fixed pin 22, thereby allowing the spring 17 to close the chuck. On indexing of the turret, the other stops on the stop-plate 26, which do not carry heads, pass inside the tube 25 when the turret is advanced and hence do not open the chuck. The mechanism may be combined with that described in Specification 565,020, in which the turret is fed forwards by a hand lever under dashpot control so that the bar-stock may engage the feed stop without bounce. The mechanism may also be combined with that described in Specification 565,021, in which a safety lock is provided for preventing rotation of the turret until the forward stroke has been completed, the operating rod for the device-sliding through the tube 25 and being actuated by the stop 27 in the work-changing station of the turret. The mechanism may also operate with separately fed work pieces instead of bar-stock, the new work pieces being placed in the chuck by hand or being presented thereto by the turret, the finished work being removed from the chuck by a spring ejector. The rod 20 may be operated manually at 23 and the chuck may be an air or magnetic chuck &c.
