Abstract

564,736. Variable - speed gearing. GILBERT & BARKER MANUFACTURING CO. Dec. 11, 1942, No. 17669. Convention date, Dec. 8, 1941. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XIX] A change speed transmission mechanism arranged between the two driving shafts of two counting mechanisms and comprising a plurality of gears all of the same size, mounted on a common axis, means for driving all the gears from one of the shafts at different speeds, a plurality of pinions each selectively engageable with said gears by a movement in a straight line parallel to the axis, and driving connections between each pinion and the other of said driving shafts, is characterised in that means are provided for bodily moving said gears in a substantially radial path to facilitate the selective movement. The invention is shown applied to a liquid dispensing apparatus with counters for registering the quantity and total cost of the liquid dispensed. Indicators are provided to show the price per unit quantity. The apparatus includes a self-measuring pump driving a shaft 27 which drives a shaft 53 through a change speed transmission mechanism selectively set in accordance with the unit price. The transmission mechanism, Fig. 8, includes a set of nine gears 55, all of the same size, mounted for independent rotation on an axis 59, a set of eight pinions 68 gearing therewith and a plurality of pinions 56, Figs. 4, 5 and 6, slidably mounted for selective engagement with the gears 55. The gears 55 are formed integral with gears 67 of differing diameter and these mesh in the manner shown with differing diameter gears 69 integral with the pinions 68. The pinions 68 with the exception of the fifth pinion, are loose on a shaft 61 that is connected by bevel gears 63, Fig. 4, to the driving shaft 27. By this means 'the drive from the shaft 61 drives the gears 55 at speeds varying from' 1 to 9. The axis 59 is supported in side plates 60 of a rocking frame pivoted about the axis of the shaft 61. A spring 66 acts to lift the gears 55 into mesh with the pinions 56. The pinions 56, are slidable along splined shafts 57 and are selectively engaged with the gears 55. Each pinion 56 is engaged between the fork of a member 91 fixed to a rack bar 88 engaging a pinion 86 on the corresponding wheel 42 of the price indicator. By turning each indicating wheel 42 by its knurled beading 92, the corresponding rack 88 is displaced to set the related pinion 56. The movements of the three shafts 57 are transmitted through two differential mechanisms to the shaft 53. The inner or uppermost shaft, Fig. 4, transmits its full movement to the shaft 53, while the intermediate shaft transmits one-tenth of its movement and the outer- or lowermost shaft transmits only onehundredth' of its movement. To hold the indicating wheels 42 in adjusted position, each is formed with a notched disc 103 with which engages a detent arm 104 on a rock-shaft 102. This shaft has fixed thereto a bell-crank with an arm 99 extending into an aperture in. the frame carrying the gears 55. A depending arm 100 of the bell-crank constitutes a manipulative means, when the door of the casing is opened, to unmesh the gears 55 and release the detents 104 to free the wheels 42. The side plates 60 of the frame are formed with toothed sectors 70 to hold the pinions 56 stationary when the wheels 42 are set in their zero positions.
