Abstract
564,124. Hand grips; handles. RALEIGH CYCLE CO., Ltd., BUXTON, S. W., and HERON, W. H. Dec. 3, 1942, No. 17197. [Class 61 (i)] [Also in GroupXXXI] A hand grip for a rod or tube, e.g. for fitting to a lever or cycle handle-bar, comprises a drawn metal cup having at each end a defined limited area or areas for location on and contact with the rod or tube and an adjacent area or areas of non-location and non-contact, the whole or some portion or portions of the outer surface being grooved or ribbed to provide a gripping surface. The cycle grip shown in Fig. 1 consists of a deep drawn steel cup having a barrel-shaped central portion 20 and cylindrical end portions 21, 22 for press-fitting or adhesively securing on the end of a bar, the grip being longitudinally ribbed externally. Other constructions are shown in which (a) only the ends 21, 22 and a narrow central band are ribbed ; (b) the grip is wholly of barrel shape ; (c) the grip, Fig. 4, is cylindrical with a ribbed central portion or with two ribbed bands 27 and plain centre and end portions 28, 29, 30 ; (d) plain end 41, 42, Fig. 8, one of which may be bell shaped, are provided on a cylindrical portion of enlarged diameter which is ribbed throughout its length or has ribbed bands 40. The ribs may be other than longitudinal and, alternatively, the grip may have a rambled or dimpled external surface. Brake or other control devices may be combined with the grip, e.g. a part may be clipped or welded to the end of the grip to carry the pivot lug for a brake lever and the control wire or cable may pass through a hole in the end of the device.
