Abstract

564,112. Typewriters. ROYAL TYPEWRITER CO., Inc. March 9, 1943, No. 3817. Convention date, June 19, 1942. [Class 100 (iv)] In a typewriter or like machine equipped for writing on paper tapes or ribbons, the tape 12 is drawn from a spool 13, Fig. 7, mounted on stud 21 carried by a plate 19 which is carried eccentrically on a shaft 18 in a bracket 14 secured to the main frame A, the shaft 18 being raised and rotated to bring the spool from its working position to within the cover of the portable machine. The tape passes over an idler 27 and is braked by a finger 30 and spring 31 on a pin 29 in a bracket 28, guides 32 being carried by plate 19. A cover 33 has pins 35 with grooves 38 engaged by spring-pressed buttons 39 carried by plate 19. This plate has two pins 43, 45 which engage a hole 43b and a keyhole slot 47 in the top plate 16 of bracket 14 so as to lock the reel in operative position, pin 43 resting on plate 16 when the reel is in folded position. Pin 45 has a reduced end 46 which may enter slot 47 but prevents lowering of the reel until it is in correct position. The tape 12, Fig. 2, is pulled past the printing point and is discharged at a severing device. The carriage C is moved on rails 4 by a band 76 attached to a spring barrel 73 and passing over a pulley 72 having a pawl 79 engaging a ratchet 75 fast on shaft 71 which drives a shaft 82 through bevel gearing 87, 88, a ratchet wheel 80 and fixed pawl 81 preventing reversal of shaft 82. Shaft 82 carries a rubber-covered feed-roll 83 for the tape which passes from the platen 7 over an idler 90 and between roll 83 and a pressure roller 97 which is mounted in a pivoted bail 93 provided with a spring 98 and severing-edge 92. Bail 93 can be swung on its pivot 94 away from roll 83 to insert a new tape. The tape is guided at the printing position 50, Fig. 10, by guides 52 secured to the scale 49. Each guide has a web 53 with flanges 54, 55 having inturned ends 56, 57, the latter being secured by rivets 58 to the scale 49. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes an escapement mechanism wherein the escapement wheel 101, Fig. 14 (Cancelled), has only six teeth a ... f to provide a longer letter spacing for the wider type used in tape printing. This wheel is mounted on a bracket 104 carried by plates 106 connecting the rails 4 and is coaxial with a pinion 103 in mesh with the carriage feed rack and engaged by a pawl 109 on wheel 101. The escapement frame 111 pivoted at 112 to bracket 104 carries a fixed dog 113 and a dog 114 pivoted at 115 and formed with a stop 116 engaging a frame arm 117, a spring arm 120 engaging heels 118, 119 on the dog. The back-spacer consists of a slide 124 carrying a pawl 126 pivoted at 127 and provided with teeth 130, 131 which engage adjacent teeth of wheel 101 to ensure a full letter space. Pawl 126 has a lug 138 engaging an arm 137 on a check pawl 132 so as to allow the slide 124 to rotate wheel 101 reversely. Pawl 126 also has an car 129 which engages the tail 144 of a lever 139 so as to rock the lever into locking engagement with the pinion 103. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
