Abstract
564,106. Percussive drills. CRAIG, E. Feb. 26, 1943, No. 3147. Convention date, Oct. 7, 1942. [Class 124] [Also in Groups II and XXII] Drill bits for rock of the type formed with a socket to receive the shank of the drill rod, the socket and shank being shaped to secure proper locking by relative rotation, for example, by being formed in cross-section to an archimedean spiral, have the socket wall such that it will yield sufficiently to correct any deformation caused during manufacture. The socket wall 4, Figs. 2' and 5, is sufficiently thin so that in the event of deformation the socket and shank 2, Figs. 1 and 5, may be forcibly assembled and brought to proper mating fit by relative rotation caused by the operation of the bit in use. Only the cutting end of the bit is hardened and this is effected by taking the bits hot from the forging-dies, trimming, sharpening, reheating and placing with the cutting end downwards on a perforated travelling belt 5, Fig. 7, in a tank 7 fitted with liquid to such a depth that only the cutting jaw is hardened, the bits being discharged to a receptacle in which the socket ends cool slowly.
