Abstract
563,321. Borehole clinometers; gyroscopic apparatus. SCOPHONY, Ltd., and WIKKENHAUSER, G. April 1, 1943, No. 5225. [Classes 97 (ii) and 97 (iii)] A borehole clinometer includes a gyroscope enclosed in an evacuated chamber and brought up to substantially normal speed by a source of power which remains on the surface of the ground, the drive of the gyroscope being there after maintained by a smaller source of power. As shown, the clinometer casing 1 is divided by a diaphragm 2 into two chambers 3, 4, both capable of being her metically sealed. The chamber 4 contains an electrically - driver gyroscope 5 and may be evacuatec through a valve 16. The chamber 3 contains a battery 6 and an electric oscillator 7 feeding the gyroscope through an output transformer 8. Before the clinometer is lowered down the borehole, the large source of power is connected to terminals 12 to drive the gyroscope up to its normal speed. The power is disconnected and terminals 13 are short-circuited to connect the battery to the oscillator for maintaining the speed of the gyro. The clinometer may then be lowered down the borehole.
