Abstract
563,256. Severing by fusion. HANCOCK, L. J. March 5, 1943, No. 3650. [Class 83 (iv)] In a flame cutting machine for cutting metal along paths of similar shape, a mechanicallydriven tracer is guided by a template or drawing lying wholly round a cylindrical surface and arranged to rotate so as to bring successive points on its profile into position for co-operation with the tracer. Metal may thus be cut along paths of recurring shapes such as a wave form in a metal section without the necessity of laying out a template or pattern for the entire length of the cut. The machine may be of the stationary type in which the section to be cut is laid on the bed of the machine or may be of the portable type having a carriage 1 with track wheels 3 running on the upturned flanges of the beam 4 to be cut. The track wheels are adjustable on their axles 7 to suit the width of the section and may be grooved or check rollers 6 on shafts 9 may be provided. The carriage has extending arms 12 for a cross rail 13 on which is mounted on rollers a carriage 2 carrying on one side an adjustable cutting burner 18 and on the other side a tracing mechanism 16 comprising an electric motor, speed reduction and variable speed gears and a magnetic tracer roller 19 engaging the profile 21 of a cylindrical template on an axis 22 in a plane containing the axis of the back axle 7. The shaft 22 carries a toothed wheel 24 meshing with a toothed wheel 25 on the back axle. When that part of the edge with which the roller is in contact is parallel with the longitudinal track, the template is rotated and the machine travels longitudinally without transverse movement. At other times when said part is transverse, the tracer roller travels transversely taking with it the burner carriage 2. The template may be replaced by a strip template engaging a pair of rollers on the tracer head or a drawing may be carried by the cylinder engaging a hand-guided mechanicallydriven tracer wheel. To sever the web completely an extension is attached thereto at the finishing end thereof.
