Abstract

563,248. Endless - track vehicles. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (Goodrich Co. B.F.). Jan. 27, 1943, No. 1417. [Class 79 (i)] A driving wheel for driving an endless track on a vehicle comprises a sprocket member 20, having teeth 18 engaging the track 11, and a concentric load-supporting member or members 25, 26 which (1) engage the track and can rotate relatively' to the sprocket members, and (2) are formed with annular grooves 32 to receive guide plates 17 on the track. The invention is shown applied to a track of the kind described in Specification 438,173 and comprising two endless rubber bands 12 reinforced by wire cables 13 and connected together at regular intervals by spaced cross-bars 14 provided with guide plates 17. The sprocket wheel 20 is fixed to a driving axle 19 and is formed with teeth 18 which engage either the cross-bars 14 or renewable wear plates 15 carrying the guide plates 17. Pulley members 25, 26 are rotatably mounted on the hub 24 of the sprocket, and the track bands 12 run on the rims of these pulleys. The relative rotation possible between the pulley members and the sprockets allows for any difference between the pitch circle of the sprocket and the pulley diameter whether caused by wear, inaccuracy of manufacture, or the presence of dirt between the wheel and the track.
