Abstract
563,062. Machines for making display cards and the like. WALPOLE, G. S. April 10, 1943, No. 5778. [Class 3 (ii)] Apparatus for cutter-crushing or transfer applying in the production of name plates, dials, cards, tabs, tickets, &c. comprises an upper platen 1 carrying dies 8, 9 and a lower platen .2 along which the backing 10 forming the cards &c. is traversed. Means are provided on the upper platen whereby the strip 11 of material which is to be applied to the backing 10 is, after passing the die 8, led away from the backing, e.g. by being led up through a slot 7 in the top platen 1 and along a channel 12 in its upper surface, or by being taken along a channel 24 in its bottom surface. A heater box 3 may be located between the press face' 5 and the top platen 1. The die 9 is a knife cutting three sides of the card &c. wholly or partially through the backing 10 at each down stroke of the press and means are provided for advancing the backing 10 automatically after each stroke so that the die 9 will cut three sides of the next card, one of which coincides with the fourth side of the previous card, and the cuttercrushing or transfer die 8 will be accurately positioned so that the part of the backing treated by it will be properly located subsequently relative to the excising die 9. These means include a notching cutter which makes equally spaced slots in one edge of the backing 10 and a spring-biassed pawl 13 having a tilting and also a lateral swing which goes to meet the oncoming notch and then pulls up the backing in exact location. A projection 22 on the pawl 13 is struck by the descending platen 1 to release the backing 10 at the instant of its contact with the die 9 and to allow it to move forward another step when the die 9 rises. The platen stroke and the -forward feeds of backing and of strip 11 may be hand, foot, or power operated. Dies for piercing the cards with holes may also be fitted.
