Abstract

562,325. Valve modulating or demodulating circuits. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., EYRE, C. M. LE G., and GILDERDALE, J. O. Feb. 1, 1943, No. 1636. [Class 40 (v)] An impedance is provided in the cathode lead of a frequency changing, demodulating or modulating valve to provide negative feedback. The signal and the carrier wave are simultaneously applied to the input and the valve is fed with such amplitudes and is so biased as to operate over a curved portion of its characteristic. The modulation product output is taken from across the cathode impedance, a blocking condenser being provided if necessary, and fed to a coaxial transmission line, the impedance of which is substantially matched. The Figure shows a frequency-changing valve V with a band filter L2, C2, L3, C3 for a radio frequency input and the local oscillator input applied to coupling coil L1. The intermediate frequency output is taken from across the cathode resistance R1 and is applied to coaxial transmission line T, condenser C1 shunting the RF input. Resistance R1 is so chosen that the line is matched to the effective output impedance of the valve. The valve is preferably of the type having a screen grid and de-coupling of the anode and screen circuits is effected by resistances R4, R6 and condensers K1.
