[Class 80 (iv)] Vehicle steering wheels have a rim portion constructed from a number of core segments provided with spigot and socket connections at their ends each segment, before assembly, being encased by a covering of thermo-plastic or thermo-setting material applied by moulding. Metal core segments b, e.g. three in number, may be in the form of tubes initially open at one end and closed at the other by a plug c which forms a spigot to enter the open end of an adjacent segment. Instead of tubes, solid rods bored at one end and reduced at the other may be'used. To the centre of each segment is attached a spoke which may be a flat metal strip or a number of wires d as shown. The assembly of core segment and spoke is placed in a mould to receive a covering e of cellulose acetate or other thermoplastic, &c. material which may include a boss f around the spoke. After the segments have been assembled, the spigot-and-socket joints may be secured by pins and the abutting ends of the thermoplastic, &c. material may be united by cementing. The wheel boss g may be die-cast around the inner ends of the spokes, or secured thereto by welding or brazing.
