Abstract
Highly viscous heat convertible resins suitable for impregnating glass fibres, tape and like insulating materials are p obtained by further polymerising silicones, comprising principally the structural unit:- <FORM:0561136/IV/1> where R is either alkyl or aryl, by treating the aryl silicones with acids while heating or by treating alkyl silicones with an oxidative agent while heating to about 200-300 DEG C. Silicones containing both aryl and alkyl radicals are treated by both methods, e.g. by heating them with hydrochloric acid while blowing air therethrough. The silicones are prepared by the hydrolysis of organo substituted silicanes obtained by the action of Grignard reagents on silicon tetrachloride or ethyl orthosilicate. The effect of the further polymerisation is to remove organic radicals and substitute oxygen therefore, whereupon cross linkages of the Si-O-Si unit to side chains occur. The polymerisation is preferably stopped while the product is still in the viscous stage and soluble in toluene. Phenyl ethyl silicone is heated to 170-180 DEG C. while water and hydrochloric acid is added slowly the reaction being hastened by a trace of ferric chloride; benzene is evolved and a sticky viscous liquid obtained. Further heating converts it into a flexible non-tacky infusible and insoluble substance. The preparation of phenyl ethyl silicone is described in Specification 561,226.
