Abstract
Gasoline hydrocarbons of a predominantly saturated nature are obtained by subjecting a normally liquid hydrocarbon fraction boiling in the gasoline range and consisting of or containing a substantial amount of olefines to catalytic conversion in the presence of catalysts free from alkali metal compounds and prepared by calcination of a composite of precipitated hydrated silica and at least one hydrate of the groups comprising precipitated hydrated alumina and zirconia, the conversion being carried out at a temperature within the range 343-482 DEG C., with a pressure of from atmospheric to 70 atmos., with liquid space velocities of from 0.5 to 5, and with contact of not more than one normally liquid volume of hydrocarbons per volume of catalyst before reactivation of the catalyst. In examples (1) an octene fraction formed by the polymerisation of isobutene and butane and having a 136 bromine number is contacted with a silica-alumina composite at 371 DEG C. under a pressure of 6.8 atmos. using a liquid space velocity of one. With a one hour run a product was obtained having a bromine number of 10; (2) a cracked gasoline containing 74 per cent olefines and 16 per cent aromatics was contacted with a silica-alumina-zirconia catalyst at 399 DEG C. under a pressure of 6.8 atmos. and with a liquid space velocity of one. With a half-hour run a product was obtained containing no olefines, 46 per cent aromatic hydrocarbons and 54 per cent paraffin hydrocarbons. Specification 523,252, [Group III], is referred to.
