[Class 83 (iii)] In an expanding mandrel for holding hollow work in a lathe or milling-machine, blades a are slidable in tapered grooves c in the body g to effect radial adjustment. The bases b of the blades and the grooves are V-shaped in cross section and springs e are held by screws on the body to engage shoulders d on the blades to retain them in the grooves. Alternatively the springs may engage grooves in the sides of the blades or a spring ring may encircle the outer ends of the blades. Adjustment is effected by a sliding or screw ring operating on a parallel portion of the body and having an internal groove engaging enlargements on the inner ends of the blades.
