Abstract

A flexible joint is formed between two rigid parts made of plastics by juxtaposing them, placing a flexible plastic strip on either side of the joint, and, by employing electrodes, setting up an alternating electric field at the joining faces to soften and consolidate the parts. In an example, two rigid sheets of methyl methacrylate polymer are placed edge to edge, with an air gap, and the joint covered by strips of flexible polyvinyl chloride. The assembly is placed between electrodes as described in Specification 555,054, [Group VIII], and subjected to an alternating electric field. The pressure used may be such as to ensure that the finished surfaces are flush and that the flexible material penetrates the air gap. Holes may be provided near the edges of the rigid parts, into which the flexible material penetrates to unite the material on both sides. The electrodes may be bars, plates, or rollers. Stops may be used to arrest the movement of the electrodes to ensure proper pressure, and to prevent excessive deformation of the material or tilting of the electrodes. Rigid sheets of a plastic may be united to flexible strips of a plastic having the same organic base, to produce a uniform sheet containing a hinge or flexible part.
