Abstract

559,607. Drilling-machines. SHAW, J. Oct. 26, 1942, No. 15018. [Class 83 (iii)] Drilling - machines for operating over a large area, as in drilling aeroplane spars, have a drill head supported in a wheeled carriage movable along rails forming a track on the machine bed. A number of rigid cast frames 2, Figs. 1 and 2, are bolted to the floor and have seatings on extensions 4 machined to a common horizontal plane to support sections of castings 1 arranged to abut at the mid points of the frames. The drill carriage runs either directly on the castings 1 or rails supported by them; and comprises side frames 6 connected by top bars 7 and an intermediate base 9 extended beyond the frames to form manipulating handles 10. The sideframes and their extensions 11 carry wheels which may have bonded rubber tyres running on the top, under and side faces of the castings 10. Rubber buffers 43 carried by brackets at each end of the lines of castings 1 prevent overrun of the carriage or carriages. To assist in locating the carriage in the required position one or more of the wheels 16, Fig. 4, running on the top surface of the castings 1 may be connected to a V-pulley driven by an endless belt from a pulley 22 on the spindle of a hand wheel 21. Idle pulleys 24, 25 are provided according to the smallest size of standard V-belt obtainable, the pulley 25 being adjustable for belt tensioning. The wheels 16 are mounted on eccentric parts of studs to provide adjustment to compensate for wear of the tyres 18. A transverse carriage 8 runs by rubber tyred rollers 30 on rails on the top frame 7. Some of the rollers may be on spindles provided with hand wheels 27. Other rollers engage a lateral rib on the rails and further rollers engage below the rails. A tubular column 38 secured at 39 in the carriage depends and may carry a T-fitting 40 serving as a steady on the brace 9. The drill head is vertically and angularly adjustable on the column 38, being clamped at 48 after adjustment. The head carries a motor 32 driving the spindle through a belt and cone pulleys 33, 34. The motor is supplied through a flexible cable 41 from a ceiling fitting 42 containing automatic means for taking up slack.
