Abstract
559,490. Fuel tanks for aircraft. SOUTHERN AIRCRAFT (GATWICK), Ltd., COXON, J. E., LINDSLEY, F., and SHELLEY, G. E. Aug. 21, 1942, No. 11817. [Class 69 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A fuel tank for aircraft, and particularly a tank adapted to be jettisoned when empty, comprises a stream-lined substantially boat- or float-shaped body structure formed wholly of wood and adapted to be readily attached to and detached from the aircraft. The frame comprises apertured bulkheads 1 extending substantially the full width and depth of the tank and preferably formed of spruce and plywood, the bulkheads being recessed to receive laminated longitudinal spars 2, preferably of spruce ; side skins 4, with similar spars 2a are fitted, and a top skin 3 is attached, the interior being then treated with petrol resisting paint &c. The feed connections 5, 6, sump 7, vent system 8 &c. are next applied, and a bottom skin 3a, proofed inside with glue, size &c. and provided with filler connections 10 and a drain 11, is then glued in position. A fairing 12 is glued over the sump, and fairings 13 are secured to the sides, the fairings preferably being of balsa, aubecia, calcium alginate or cellulose acetate moulding. A cover of doped fabric may be provided. Mild steel cover plates 14 may be provided at the front and rear edges, while the metal fittings are provided with electrical earth connections 19. The tank is releasably secured to an aircraft by forwardly extending lugs 9 adapted to engage straps on the the bottom of the aircraft, and by a shouldered peg 9a adapted to be engaged by releasable means on the aircraft; stabilizing bolts 18 hold the tank against play.
