Abstract
558,820. Vitamins. NATIONAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. July 20, 1942, No. 10056. Convention date, July 26, 1941. [Class 2 (iii)] Edible fatty oils and fats containing unsaponifiable matter are treated with alkali to effect partial or complete saponification in the presence of a sugar, sugar ester, ketone or like sugar derivative or edible gum, whereby the unsaponifiable material may be recovered free from objectionable taste or odour. In examples : (1) crude shark liver oil mixed with ethylenedichloride, isopropanol and blackstrap molasses or sorbitol is freed from oxygen by passing in nitrogen with agitation ; saponification is then effected by heating with caustic potash, the soap separated after adding further ethylenedichloride and the unsaponifiable fraction recovered by removing the solvent : (2) shark liver oil is similarly saponified after being refined by treating with adsorptive carbon or clover honey. The process is particularly applicable to the treatment of vitamin A and D containing oils of fish origin but wheat germ oil and palm oil are also mentioned as starting materials. Specifications 535,014 and 550,845 are referred to.
