558,795. Repairing and assembling aircraft. CHILDS, W., and STEPHENS, G. May 20, 1942, No. 6842. [Class 4] A supporting appliance for a work-piece such as the centre section of an aeroplane comprises a framework upstanding from a wheeled carriage and a support for the work-piece adjustably mounted on the framework for movement in a vertical direction and about a horizontal axis. The uprights 12 of a framework 8, 10, 11, 12 are provided with channel members 13 in which slides a block 14 carrying a spindle 18 upon which is rotatably mounted a plate 19 carrying a cradle 25 adapted to support one side of the centre section of an aeroplane. A similar appliance supports the other side of the section. The plate 19 is readily detachable from the spindle 18. Vertical adjustment of the block 14 is effected by a screw 15 engaging a nut-member 16 on the block and driven by either of two shafts 27, 28. The plate 19 is locked in the desired angular position by engagement in apertures 22 therein of slidable pins 24 carried by the block 14 or by locking screws extending through arcuate slots. The wheels 6 and the shafts 26, 28 may be power driven. The block 14 may instead be operated by a hydraulic jack. The framework may be mounted in runways on the wheeled carriage to permit horizontal adjustments.
