558,501. Measuring short time-intervals; indicating apparatus. HUGHES & SON, Ltd., H. (Bludworth, T. F.). Aug. 31, 1942, No. 12243. [Class 106 (iv)] [Also in Group XVIII] A device for indicating short timeintervals comprises a stack of light transmitting bars having inner and outer ends and means to illuminate the inner end of at least one of said bars at the end of the measured interval of time. The device is shown as applied to echo-sounding apparatus in which a semi-cylindrical shutter 14 is rotated by a constant speed motor, and when in the position shown in Fig. 2 closes contacts to light a neon tube 6 and to send a sound impulse from a transmitter 1, Fig. 1. The signal is reflected from the ocean bed and is received by a receiver 3 and amplifier 5 to extinguish the neon tube 6, at which time the shutter has uncovered a number of bars 13 of translucent material, of which the ends adjacent a scale 10 have been glowing to indicate the depth. Alternatively the neon tube is flashed only when the signal is received. In a modification, the shutter is cylindrical with a small aperture illuminating only one bar at a time.
