Abstract

558,485. Floating coastal defence units. PHILLIPS, W. A. Aug. 23, 1942, No. 13406. [Classes 113 (i) and 113 (ii)] A floating coastal defence unit is provided with a flat, curved, or dome bottom 5 surrounded by a circular, polygonal, or like annular keel 7. The keel may be parallel sided or it may taper downwardly, it may form a downward continuation of, and be thicker than, the side wall 4 of the unit, and it may be provided with strengthening webs 8, 9. Through passages may be formed in the keel adjacent the bottom 5. The parts 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 are preferably constructed integrally of reinforced concrete, and the unit may be of stepped form, as shown, or approximate to that of a conventional buoy. In the latter form, the keel may be spaced from the wall of the unit and be connected thereto by the strengthening webs. Specification 558,455 is referred to.
