Abstract
558,374. Testing indicating-instruments. FIELD AIRCRAFT INSTRUMENTS & EQUIPMENT, Ltd., and THOMAS, A. H. J. Oct. 30, 1942, No. 15319. [Class 106 (iv)] [Also in Group XX] An apparatus for use in testing gyroscopic instruments comprising an instrument-carrying frame and separate means for rocking the frame about each of three axes at right angles to one another so that the instruments may be subjected to rolling, pitching and yawing motions independently or to any combination thereof. The instruments are secured to a twelve-sided frame 1 attached to a support 4 carried on a Hooke's joint at the top of a vertical spindle 6 which may be rotated continuously by a belt 74 or may alternatively be oscillated by engaging two dogs 60, 61 to impart yawing motion to the frame. The amplitude of the yawing movements may be varied. Rolling and pitching movements are imparted to the frame by the sliding movements of a tubular member 13 provided with a partspherical head 12. The tubular member is movable horizontally in any direction and is actuated by two separate adjustable-throw cranks operating in two directions at right angles. The adjustable throws permitting the amplitude of the rolling and pitching motions may be separately varied or either of them, or both, suppressed. The vertical spindle 6 is hollow to provide an air duct connecting the instruments with a pump 92 which places the instruments under a partial vacuum during testing. In testing the instruments, an initial reading thereof is taken whilst the frame 1 is horizontal and a second reading is taken after the testing movements. If the frame 1 stops out of the horizontal it may be quickly brought to the horizontal by pulling out and then turning a hand-lever. A reverse movement of the hand-lever restores the parts in readiness to start a further testing operation.
