Abstract
558,175. Roads, runways &c. NEUCHATEL ASPHALTE CO., Ltd., and IONIDES, P. D. Sept. 15, 1942, No. 12997. [Class 1071 Layers of fluid material of high consistency, such as hot mastic, are laid upon surfaces, for example in forming coverings of roads or runways, by moving relatively to the surface a vessel containing the material in a hot fluid state, and extruding the material from the vessel on to the surface through an elongated orifice at a rate substantially proportional to the speed of movement of the vessel. A vehicle, comprising a chassis 2 on pneumatic tyre wheels 3, is adapted to be drawn by a tractor and has automatic braking means 4 to prevent over-running ; the vehicle carries four hydraulic rams 52 supporting through ball and socket connections a vessel 1, of thin steel plate, formed of upper and lower parts connected by flanges 113, the upper part having a reinforcing ring 10, and the lower part having an elongated aperture 5. A piston within the vessel 1 has a bevelled lower edge and asbestos packing rings and is connected to the plunger 29 of a hydraulic ram 8 pivoted at 17 in a frame 14 secured to the vessel ; the piston, after removal from the vessel, may be swung laterally by chains 22 secured to arms 21 and driven by a handle 25 through gearing 26, a pawl 28 and ratchet wheel 27 then holding the parts. A pump 9 is driven from one of the wheels 3 through a chain 33 and a clutch, and delivers fluid to the ram 9 to cause the piston to extrude material through the aperture 5 at a rate proportional to the speed of the vehicle; the pump 9 may also be driven by a handle 41, shaft 40, chain 42 and a clutch to apply initial pressure to the piston. A second pump 44 may also be driven by handle 41 and shaft 40 through chain gearing 45, a clutch and spur gearing 49, 51, and supplies fluid either to the ram 8 to raise the piston, or to the rams 52 to raise the vessel 1 and parts carried thereby for transport ; mechanical means may be provided to hold the vessel in raised position. The aperture 5 leads to a spout comprising a hinged leading side 59, which may be raised by a handle 62 or link 67 to close the aperture ; the trailing side of the spout comprises an oil-saturated wooden screed 69 backed by a metal plate 68 pivoted at 70 and provided with arms 74 to which weights are applied to load the screed. The operative position of the screed is determined by runners 71 pivoted thereto by pins 72 and connected to plates 75 which form the sides of the spout and have wedge-shaped lower edges. Behind the vehicle, a gritter may be trailed to deposit sand, stone chips or camouflage material such as wood chips. The mastic used preferably comprises 12- per cent bitumen, 18 per cent filler and 70 per cent aggregate at a temperature below 450‹ F. It may be applied in spaced strips, the spaces then being filled in after suitable runners have been applied to run on the initial strips; a lateral strip may be applied similarly.
