557,855. Locking nuts and other fastening members; pipe joints. DEHN, F. B. (Miller, A. W.). June 4, 1942, No. 7621. [Classes 44 and 89 (i)] [Also in Group XXVIII] Self-locking nuts, pipe joints &c. are formed in two parts that interengage by members eccentric to the bolt, pipe &c., means being provided to determine the free and locked positions. The nut section 1. Fig. 1, has an eccentric projection 6 received in a correspondingly eccentric socket 7 in the part 2. The faces 9, 10 are inclined at the thread angle. A thin rib 14, when the parts are forcibly axially assembled in the position of Fig. 1, engages the inclined bottom 17 of an undercut groove 19, becomes curled inwards and holds the parts together as in Fig. 3 which shows the free position when the parts are coaxial. The projection 20, Figs. 1 and 4, is reduced in thickness for rather more than 180 degrees and forms shoulders 22 for engagement with a pin 23 in the other nut part. The parts are thereby arrested after rotation to maximum locking position so that there is no tendency to work loose. The relative rotation may be arrested by contact of the faces 9, 10 or of the outer faces of the nut. One of the faces may be square with the axis and carry a projecting pin to contact the inclined face. In the case of small nuts a segmental rib on one part engages an annular groove in the other blocked at one point by a pin. The device may be employed, to secure a fastening on non-threaded ribs or tubes, unthreaded nut-like members being employed. A single pin is located on the periphery of the eccentric surface of one part to co-operate with two such pins or the other. Another arrangement for coupling two pipes comprises a sleeve which may have right- and left-hand threads, 72, Fig. 14, or may be plain. Eccentric portions 62 coact with eccentric sockets 64 in members fitting the pipes at 63. Projections 67 co-operate with shoulders forming the ends of raised sections 68 on an intermediate collar 71. In a modification for say small and thin tubes 78, Fig. 17, a split sleeve 75 is interposed between the tubes and the parts 76, 77. The sleeve 75 may be chamfered to fit flanges 81 on the tubes and these flanges may be upset to fill the chamfering when the sleeve 75 is contracted by relative rotation of the parts 76, 77 due to the engaging eccentric surfaces. For very thin or delicate parts rubber &c. sleeves may be interposed.
