Abstract

557,779. Turning; gauging-devices. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and RICKS, F. April 10, 1942, No. 4706. [Class 83 (iii)] A lathe &c. for turning work having several diameters has means for terminating the different stages of the operation consisting of an eccentric spindle adapted to receive a succession of ring stops which are slipped into position over the spindle. In one form the work is mounted between centres 7, 9, and is turned by a tool 15, or by a tool mounted in a turret carried on a cross slide 13 on a saddle 11 movable on the bed 1. A bracket 17 adjustably secured to the bed carries a vertical spindle 19 formed with a flange 23 and an eccentric upper portion 21 over which one of a number of gauging stops 29 may be fitted. The flange has a reference mark coacting with divisions marked on the bracket the rotation of the flange through one division being arranged to adjust the stop through 0.001 inch longitudinally of the work. The stops may be either of ring form as shown at 45, Fig. 2, or of elongated form 29, and held against rotation by a pin 55. The stops coact with a face 37 on the saddle to limit the longitudinal traverse. In a similar way the cross-slide carries a bracket 39 fitted with a spindle having an eccentric upper portion 43 receiving stop rings 45 which coact with an adjustable abutment 49 to a bracket secured to the saddle to limit the travel of the cross slide. All the ring stops are made to exact dimensions and hardened. In producing work such as a bevel gear blank and spindle, Fig. 2, with portions 63, 65, 67, 69, 71 and 73 of different diameters and lengths, a ring stop corresponding to face 77 is placed iii position and the tool brought into engagement with this face and the bracket 17 clamped with the stop faces in engagement. The eccentric 21 is used for fine adjustment. For setting the bar 49 the tool is adjusted to a part of the bar which has been turned to correct diameter and the bar 49 placed against the appropriate stop ring. A model work-piece may be used for these settings. A drawing with various parts of the work shown in different colours may be supplied in conjunction with correspondingly coloured ring stops. The drawing may also be marked with symbols A ... D to indicate the order of operation on the different parts and other symbols may be used to denote the tool which is to be used. If a tool change is required a tool is set up to a gauge. The stops for the two motions may be carried on boards 81, 83 located at each end of the machine, Fig. 1. The stops may be used for machines other than lathes.
