Abstract
557,351. Self-locking nuts. ROBERTSON, E. R. Feb. 13, 1942, Nos. 1917, 14298 and 15055. [Class 89 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] Relates to self-locking nuts of the kind comprising a body portion and a separately formed locking member, secured to the non-working end of the body against relative rotary and axial bodily movement, and having a flexible diaphragm portion and a thread corresponding to but out of pitch with that of the body and consists in so securing the locking member to the body that at least the outer part of the flexible diaphragm extends externally of the body. A body 1 is formed with a reduced extension having inner and outer frusto-conical surfaces and may be of steel, or aluminium or magnesium metal or alloy, and receives a locking member 10, stamped from sheet metal such as spring or stainless steel, or phosphor bronze, with a flange 12 which is closed round the extension which is then upset to secure the parts further, stiffening ribs 15, Fig. 4, being impressed at the same time. The complete nut tapped and the locking member is then dished to produce the pitch displacement. Further stiffening ribs may be formed at this time and the extension may be further upset to displace the locking member bodily in an axial direction. Such upsetting may supersede the dishing. The greatest diameter of the locking member does not exceed the diameter of the nut across the flats so that the use of a spanner is not impeded. In a modification the interlocking may be effected by crimping or corrugating at 16, Fig. 10, or in a further form by spot welding. The locking member may have a polygonal extension 18, Fig. 17, enclosing the body 21 and secured by flanging at 19 or by welding. The nut may not be completely enclosed and in this case the sides are preferably recessed to give a flush finish, or part of the nut may be turned down to receive a cylindrical extension. The locking member may be a disc secured by a separate annulus, and may be formed with a stamped central flange so that it may carry several threads instead of merely a part of one. The body part may also be stamped from sheet metal with a diverging flange at the non-working end to receive a locking member of the general form shown in Fig. 4 or with a flat flange 24, Fig. 25, to which the locking member 10 is welded at 35. The base flange may be formed at 36 for engagement by a spanner or may be flat and square &c. to provide an anchor nut. More than one locking disc may be employed.
