[Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] The yarn or the like on bobbins are marked with identifying indicia while the bobbin is in, or is being removed from the machine in which the bobbins are wound ; the marking means may be arranged to operate automatically during relative motion between the means and the bobbin while they are in contact with one another and during the doffing of the bobbin or at the completion of the winding operation and before doffing. As shown the winding machine is of the construction described in Specifications 520,038 and 548,654 and when the bobbin B is doffed it falls upon the spring-hinged cover 28 of the shoot 25 opens it and drops down the shoot where it contacts with wicks 48 supplied with a fugitive dye f from a container 32 fixed to the side of the shoot. The container is divided by portions into compartments for the different dyes and has a spring-controlled cover 43 for filling purposes ; each wick is disposed in a shallow trough 36 having inclined sides and lips 48 for compressing the ends of the wick projecting beyond the ends of the troughs which are pivoted to a wire bail 46 and maintained in a position slightly inclined to the horizontal by springs 49, the inner ends of the troughs engaging spouts 41 leading to the container to limit the upward movement of the troughs which are depressed as the falling bobbin contacts with the wicks and is marked thereby. The container and associated parts may be replaced by spring-controlled holders carrying differently coloured crayons. In a gang machine the bobbins are discharged on to a travelling endless band having transverse bars which engage the bobbin and carry them past pivoted holders carrying marking crayons. In another arrangement in which the machine has a slidable yarn-retrieving device which, at the completion of the winding, carries a loop of the yarn from the nose of the bobbin to the bobbin drawing head, the bobbin is marked by capillary tubes projecting into dye containers secured by a clip to the device.
