Abstract
556,534. Trenching ploughs. MANTON, V. G., MUSSON, W. B., and ARNOLD, R. LEE-. May 6, 1942. [Class 6 (i)] A trench excavator comprises an adjustable blade 29 mounted in a frame consisting of a horizontal plate 12 resting on the ground, soil deflecting members 10 and spaced vertical plates 16. A beam 18 fixed between the tops of the plates 16 projects in a forward direction its relation to a bar 19 pivoted to the plates and provided with a coupling member 20 for attachment to a tractor being varied by means of a perforated link 21. Reversely channeled angle irons 17 space the lower parts of the plates 16 and between them slides a hollow column 23. Mounted in bearings in the upper part of the column but secured against longitudinal movement is a rod 24 which at its lower end works in a nut 26 trunnioned in brackets secured to one of the plates 17. The excavating tool 29 fixed'on the end of column 23 may thus be adjusted when the operator, standing on a platform between the wings 14, rotates the handwheel 28. Side blades 30 define the sides of the trench. A removable nose may be attached to the cutter 29, and a vertical cutter 34 may depend centrally from the beam 18 for dividing the soil for diversion to the sides of the plates 10. Supplementary nose pieces 33 may also be applied to the junction of the plates 10, and the intersection of the front edge of the column 23 with the plates 10 occurs at ground level.
