5 Claims.
My invention relates to scariers adapted to be attached to what is known as a bulldozer machine which is a powerful tractor of the caterpillar type having an adjustable grader blade at one end for road making.
Such machines have enormous tractive power and a very considerable problem presents itself in making attachments such as grader blades and scariers that will have the requisite strength without objectionable weight, it being expedient to use the best alloy steels in any event.
The purpose of my invention is to combine the grader blade and the scarier in such a manner;-
First, that the strength of one member will support that of the other and whereby each may be made lighter than would otherwise be necessary;
Second, to so distribute the material of construction in thus combining the two elements that each will utilize as far as possible the material and distribution of both according to the well understood principles of stress resistance;
Third, to so attach the scarifier teeth that they are securely held yet easily removable; and
Fourth, to so arrange the scarifier that the teeth may be projected a short distance to engage a hard road surface and when thus projected t be supported intermediate their length and thus greatly strengthened.
With these and other objects which will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, my invention resides in the parts and combinations of parts and structures hereinafter described in this specification and delineated in the accompanying drawing, in which,-
Fig. I is a back view broken in two to avoid undue length of the drawing and repetition of the parts;
Fig. II is a section on the line II-II of Fig. I and shows the scarier teeth in their retracted or inoperative position; and
Fig. III is a fragmentary View of the lower portion of Fig. II, showing the scarier teeth in the position that they will occupy when practically fully extended.
It will be understood that the scarier teeth may occupy any intermediate position between that shown in Fig. II and Fig. III and that at all times the back of the scariiier teeth will be suptractor are not shown as they are well understood andform no part of the present invention.
My device consists essentially of the grader blade I, which as explained will be suitably attached to the tractor with provision for adjustment as to depth of cut and angularity of blade with respect to the roadway in the known manner. An angular support 2, is attached to the backof the blade I at 3c in a secure manner, preferably byfusion welding or equivalent means.
Attached to the support 2 is a trough 3, preferably made of structural steel plate formed to define three sides of a quadrangle and which Will extend substantially the length of the blade from end to end as shown in Fig. I.
Movable vertically in the trough 3, is a scariler beam '4, having a plurality of pockets 5 within which are placed the scarier teeth 6, a counter bore 1, in the beam 4, accommodates the head 8, of the scarier teeth 6. A plate 9, preferably of steel, serves as a retainer for holding the scarifier teeth against being driven out of the beam 4 under conditions of use. The plate 9 is held by a plurality of studs such as I0, each of which is provided with .a slot II within which is driven a taper key I2. A hydraulic cylinder I3 is positioned above the plate 9 and is equipped with a piston rod I4 and in the interior is a piston which is not shown, the details of hydraulic cylinders needing no explanation to those familiar with such machines. Pipes I5 and I6, provide means for ingress and egress of hydraulic iiuid to the cylinder I3, and a control, not shown, will be provided to operate this cylinder and its piston in the known manner.
Large tractors of the character used for this machine are always provided with hydraulic pumps, using oil as a hydraulic medium, for manipulating the various parts and particularly for raising, lowering and swinging the grader blade; hence no additional equipment will be required to operate my new scarifler.
It will be noted that the trough 3, is a hollow beam well adapted to develop great strength in proportion to the amount of material used in its construction; that it contains a substantially solid beam 4, preferably made from a steel casting, tough, resilient and of great strength and having a high elastic limit.
It will be noted that the angular support such as 2 will be another hollow beam provided with 'a plurality of websl such as 2a intended to develop` the greatest strength possible for the amount of material used and it will be also noted indicated by 4a.

One of the most important features of my new device is the series of slots 3b, through which the scarier teeth project and as shown in Fig III they support the scarifler teeth 6 in such a manner that there is ordinarily no leverage pressure at the point where they emerge from the beam Consequently when it is desired to plow up a pavement such as macadam, substantially as hard as cement concrete, these teeth may be projected by using the hydraulic cylinders to give a very small degree of penetration. The teeth 6 will be supported from close to their points and being made of the best material obtainable, they will tear up a pavement of the character indicated and utilize to a full extent the enormous power available from a driving mechanism of the character heretofore indicated. On a second trip and when the extremely hard surface of the pavement has been broken up the teeth may be extended to their full extent about as shown in Fig. III, or a `little further, and the balance of the roadway completely broken up. Upon withdrawal of the scarier teeth 6 to the position shown in Fig. II the grader blade I may be placed in service in the customary manner very eiectively supported by the scarier and its structural elements.
I am aware that blade graders are old; I am also aware that scarifier attachments both adjustable and xed are old in the art but I am not aware that the blade and the scarier attachment have heretofore been combined in my eil'ective manner and I am not aware that provision has ever been made to support a scarier tooth intermediate its length of projection from a scarier beam in such a manner and so eiectively as I have done it and for the purpose indicated.
Having thus fully described my invention so clearly and completely that those skilled in the art to which it appertains, or is most nearly connected, may make and use the same without further infomation; it being understood that variations may be made within the scope of the appended claims, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. In a scarifler for a grader, a grader blade,
a support on'the back of the blade that is rigid 5 therewith, a hollow beam member rigid with the support and a scarifier head adjustably movable vertically within said hollow beam.
2. In a blade typev grader, a. blade, a.v box-like beam on the back of the blade that is rigid l0 therewith, a scarifier head adjustably movable within the said hollow beam, hydraulic means for controlling the scarier head, scarier teeth in the said head and slots in the bottom of the hollow beam through which the teeth are adapted 15 to project.
3. In a scarier attachment for a grading machine, a grader blade, a scarifler -rearwardly of the blade and rigid therewith in horizontal planes but movable in a vertical plane, a hollow beam 20 member rigid with said blade within which said scarlier is restrained against horizontal movement and means for moving said scarifler in vertical planes to adjust for use.

In a scariner attachment for a blade-grad- 35 ing machine, a blade, a scariiier beam support made rigid with the back of the blade and arranged to lend support thereto,a hollow beam made rigid with the support, a scarier head movable within said hollow beam for vertical ad- 40 justment, teeth in the scarier head and slots in the bottom of the hollow beam through which the said teeth are adapted to be adjustably projected.
