Abstract

556,180. Collimators. LINK AVIATION DEVICES, Inc. April 30, 1942, No. 5839. Convention date, May 15, 1941. [Class 97 (i)] A collimator comprises a tube having a lens at one end, a reflector at the other end, and a light source in housing means at one side of and adjacent the lens so placed that a parallel beam emerges from the lens ; the collimator may be tiltably mounted as described in Specification 556,207, and may be used for testing the readings of sextants. As shown, a conical tube 22 has a projecting hollow rib 118 adjustably housing a lighting unit 128 adjacent a collimating lens 191, and supporting a dry cell 120 to supply the unit 128. A plane surfacereflecting mirror 174 is carried at the smaller end of the tube 22. The unit 128 contains a lamp, Fig. 5, 140 having a concentrated filament, a diaphragm 168 having a central pinhole, diffusing screens 170, 172 between the lamp and pinhole, and a diaphragm 164 having an aperture restricting the cone of light rays to one that is wholly received by the lens 191. The tube 22 is adjustably mounted as described in Specification 556,207, and has a vernier scale 72 and reading mark as therein described. It may be set to agree with any altitude reading of the sextant that is to be tested, and the sextant may be placed in any part of the collimated beam for the tests, the image of the points source forming the equivalent of a star.
