[Class 47 (ii)] A fire-extinguisher comprises a body portion of sheet metal &c. of comparatively light construction with an upper portion 1 of sheet metal, synthetic resin &c. with a threaded neck 2 to receive a head 3 which supports a spring-controlled striker head 7 carrying a striker pin 8. A metal plate 5 clamped between a shoulder 6 of the neck 2 and a rubber washer 4 supports a gas-generating cartridge comprising a flanged metal base 16 and a cardboard or metal cylindrical wall 17 of the breech portion of the cartridge, which contains a base wad 18, cap chamber 19, percussion cap 20, percussion cap composition 21, and anvil 22. A fuse 23 leads from the chamber 19 to an ejectable portion of the cartridge, comprising a metal or other cylinder resistant to the fire-extinguishing liquid 15 containing superposed charges 27 .....27<SP>111</SP>, of a compressed blackpowder-like composition, each surrounded on its cylindrical surface, and the lowest one also on its base, by layers 28 ..... 28<SP>111</SP> of heat-insulating material. A perforated cap 30 closes the upper end of this part of the cartridge, with a clear space above the uppermost charge 27, and a lead sinker 25 is attached to its lower end by a water-tight soldered joint 26. In operation, when the pellets are ignited by the fuse, the ejectable portion of the cartridge falls to the bottom of the extinguisher and the charges 27 continue to burn, gas being discharged through the cap 30 to force the fire-extinguishing liquid through a discharge tube 13, the lower end of which is protected by a grid 12.
