Abstract
555,713. Riveting. CHICAGO PNEUMATIC TOOL CO. July 21, 1942, No. 10176. Convention date, Dec. 30, 1941. [Class 43] In an automatic tool for setting rivets of the kind having an internal screwthread at the end of the shank, driven and driving shafts are provided with two connections, the first causing rotation of the driven shaft with the driving shaft and relative axial movement, and the second permitting free rotation of the driven shaft at first and later preventing such rotation. A sleeve 13 is driven by an electric or other reversible motor. The sleeve is internally threaded to engage a driven shaft 13, a spring 17 providing friction at the screw-threads. A bit 21 is constrained by a ball 22, held in place by a sleeve 25, the rotate with the driven shaft, the bit being threaded to engage the internal thread of the rivet 31. The bit rotates with ,but can slide longitudinally through, an anvil 34 co-operating with a friction ring 41. The bit is introduced into the rivet and rotates freely until the anvil 24 contacts with the head of the rivet. Further relative rotation causes the ring 41 to retard the rotation of the anvil, with the result that the sleeve 13 draws the driven shaft 16 upwardly, and a ball 47 rises and engages one of a number of grooves 46, stopping the rotation of the driven shaft. Consequent axial movement of the bit expands the central part of the rivet to grip the work. When this expansion is complete rotation of the sleeve 13 ceases on account of the resistance to rotation causing a clutch, not shown, to slip. The direction of rotation of the sleeve 13 is then reversed and the tool is disengaged.
