Abstract
555,481. Lubricating compositions. EDWARDS, A.E. Dec. 18, 1941, No. 16324. Convention date, Dec. 3, 1940. Drawings to Specification. [Class 91] [Also in Groups IV and VIII] Glass and other mineral fibres are coated with an organic cationic-active substance capable of ionizing in water to form a cation containing nitrogen, phosphorus, or sulphur in combination with a radical containing more than eight carbon atoms attached by a carbon bond directly to the nitrogen, phosphorus, or sulphur atom, so as to lubricate the fibres or minimize mutual abrasion. The cationic-active substance may be a longchain type of primary, secondary, or tertiary amine, quaternary ammonium compound, phosphonium compound or sulphonium compound. If sufficiently soluble in water it may be used in the form of the free base, but a salt such as the chloride, acetate, bromide, or dibasic acid salt may be used . It may be cetyl or stearyl amine hydrochloride, or dodecyl amine, hexadecylamine, or dodecyl methyl amine, or a salt thereof, or trimethyl stearyl ammonium bromide, trimethyl cetyl ammonium bromide, dodecyl pyridinium sulphate, octadecyl oxymethyl pyridinium chloride, octadecyl choline chloride, octadecyl betaine, benzyl stearyl sulphonium methyl sulphate, or triamyl phosphonium cetyl bromide. Instead of pyridinium compounds similar quinolinium or morpholinium compounds may be used. If the cationicactive substance contains a long aliphatic chain, e.g. of 12-22 carbon atoms, a marked lubricating effect is obtained. A mixture of mono-octadecyl amine hydrochloride or acetate and mono-hexadecyl amine hydrochloride or acetate may be used. The cationic-active substance is preferably applied to the fibres in the form of an aqueous solution or dispersion of low concentration but it may be applied as a solution in an organic solvent. The solution may also contain gums, starches, or resins. It may be applied to glass filaments at a point between the source of molten glass and the drawing device where they are being grouped into a strand. In an example, the coating liquid comprises about 1 per cent. of dextrinized starch, 1 per cent. of tapioca flour, 0.2 per cent. of stearylamine acetate, and 0.2 per cent. of corn syrup, dissolved in water. For treating glass fibres in the form of glass wool or in the form of staple yarn, the coating liquid may be an emulsion of mineral oil in water containing stearylamine acetate. The coating liquid may be applied to rock wool or slag wool to improve the flexibility of bats and similar articles made therefrom. Instead of starch or oil, the coating liquid may contain asphalt, resins, waxes, or other bonding materials. In an example, a composition for bonding glass fibre mats comprises phenol-formaldehyde, mineral oil, stearylamine acetate, acetic, acid, ammonium chloride, and water. The mixture is applied to the mineral fibres as they build up into mat formation or to an already formed mat. Glass fabrics may be treated with the compositions. Specification 532,528, [Group VIII], is referred to.
