Abstract

555,318. Making composite wood boards. KAHR, G. Feb. 7, 1942, No. 1646. Convention date, May 12, 1941. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 8, 1942.] [Classes 145 (i) and 145 (ii)] In making composite wood boards comprised of a number of layers glued together comprising a parquet veneer layer, a filling layer of longitudinal pieces, and covering veneer layers on the side of the filling layer opposite to that to which the parquet layer is glued, the various layers are placed upon one another in a matrix having at least one adjustable side wall, the lengths forming the parquet layer being arranged in layers in a magazine in rectangles corresponding to the parquet pattern and of a width corresponding to the width of the board being produced and such layers being inserted one after the other into the bottom of the matrix from one end thereof ; the lengths forming the filling layer are arranged and cut so as to form a layer corresponding to the length and breadth of the board and are inserted on top of the parquet veneer layer and the covering veneers are then put on the filling layer and the whole glued and pressed together. As shown the parquet lengths 5, 6 are stacked in magazines 7, 8 and are pushed therefrom on to a table 9 and into the matrix 1 which has a pair of channels, the matrix, after one channel is filled with the parquet lengths, being advanced a short step for the filling of the other channel. The matrix is then advanced a long step opposite table 10 of the length of the matrix and on to which the lengths 11 forming the filling layer are advanced in staggered formation, the lengths abutting a stop 16 and being cut at the other end of the table 10 by a circular saw 10 and the stop being then removed and the filling layer being pushed into the leading channel of the matrix on top of the parquet layer. After being advanced another short step for the filling of the other channel the matrix is advanced for the insertion of two veneer layers 51, 52 on top of the filling layer and is then introduced into a heated press for consolidating the layers ; glue which is dry at ordinary temperatures may be applied between the layers. The matrix comprises a base plate 21 with longitudinal angle irons 19, 20 rigidly secured thereto and a pair of angle irons 22, 23 adjustable transversely of the matrix for pressing the layers laterally in both channels of the matrix, a bar 25, provided with a coyer plate 32, between the irons 22, 23, having a screw 28 passing through a yoke 29 bearing against the ends of the irons and being adjustable by a nut 31. The irons and the sides of the bar have oppositely disposed inclines with balls 27 between the inclines so that as the bar is drawn forwardly actuating the nut 31 the irons are forced sideways to clamp the layers in the channels of the matrix. The ends of the channels where the yoke 29 is situated are closed by fixed angle irons 37, 38, the other ends of the channels being closed by a removable yoke 39 pivotally connected to the irons 19, 20 by tension bolts 41 and nuts 46 ; the upper veneer layers may be returned in the matrix by leaf springs carried by the angle irons 19, 20, 22 and 33. The parquet veneer layers may be displaced at one longitudinal edge relatively to the other layers by bars 36 so that tongues may be cut at those edges without cutting the parquet veneer layers.
