Abstract

[Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Groups XI, XXIX and XXXVII] An incinerator for sanitary towels and like absorbent material comprises an incinerating chamber provided with a closure device displaceable for insertion of the towel or like material into the chamber, heating means for destroying the material controlled by movement of the closure device and means for creating an air draught through inlets at the bottom of the chamber. The heating means may consist of a gas burner or electrically heated elements. Figs. 1 and 2 show an incinerating chamber A with a gas burner B and grate 12 on which the material is deposited after lifting the fireclay-lined lid 15 about its hinge pin 17. The action of lifting the lid opens the gas supply valve 46 through arms 20, slotted link 50 and lever 47 the gas being ignited by a pilot burner 43. Air is admitted to the ashpit through radial pipes 35. After closing the lid the gas supply valve is gradually closed by the action of a timing device, Figs. 1 and 4, consisting of a cylinder 53 with a piston 54 which is raised by one arm of the lever 47 when the lid is lifted and is lowered by the action of a spring 57, the rate of lowering being controlled by a needle valve 60 which controls the escape of air from the underside of the piston and thus the rate of closing of the gas supply valve. The incinerator shown in Fig. 5 comprises a pivoted hearth 72 at the base of the chamber A<SP>1</SP> containing electric heating elements covered with mica or like refractory material for supporting the material to be incinerated. When the pivoted door 79 is opened to insert material to be burnt, the hearth is tilted by levers 86, 88 connected by a link 87 to deposit any ashes &c. remaining on the hearth from a previous incineration, into the ashpit C<SP>1</SP>. As the lever 88 moves upwardly a pin 111 thereon engages a fork 109 on the piston rod of the timing device D<SP>1</SP> which is similar to that described above. The fork 109 in its upward movement releases a spring-pressed switch lever 105 to close contacts 106, 107 and allow current to pass from the mains to the heating elements B<SP>1</SP> and to a motor driving fan F which draws air through louvres 96, 97 and exhausts ashes &c. from the pit C<SP>1</SP>. Instead of electric heating elements, a burner similar to that'shown in Fig. 2 may be embodied in the hearth 72 and covered by a plain or apertured plate of non-oxidizing metal, the gas supply to the burner being passed through the hollow spindle of the hearth and controlled by a gas supply valve and timing device as described above.
