Abstract
554,436. Safety devices for road &c. vehicles. PEYMAN, A. W. D. July 22, No. 11135. [Class 103(ii)] [Also in Group XL] An automatic safety device for road and railway vehicles comprises an exhauster or vacuum pump y, Fig. 2, one or more vacuum cylinders x controlled by a valve s for operating a brake or fender guard or both these, and photo-electric circuits for determining the position of the valve in dependence on the presence of an obstruction in front of the vehicle. The photo-electric circuits include a lamp e, Fig. 1, focussed to a point ahead of the vehicle, say 40 feet, by means of a parabolic mirror e<SP>1</SP> and a lens e<SP>2</SP>. An infra-red screen e<SP>3</SP> may be provided. A photoelectric cell d is adapted to receive the light reflected by an obstruction at that distance and is connected through a speedometer controlled switch c to an amplifier f, the circuits of which include a relay g, g<SP>1</SP>, g<SP>2</SP>, a triple switch a, an engine ignition coil b, and a device l for converting a low voltage current from a battery k into a high voltage current. The battery k serves to heat the filament of the amplifier f, and to supply anode voltage thereto, and is also connected to the photo-electric cell through a potentiometer m. The amplifier circuits are switched on simultaneously by the three arms of the switch a. The lamp e and the engine ignition coil b are thereby switched in, but the photo-electric cell circuit remains open until closed by the speedometer controlled switch c when the vehicle has speeded up above a predetermined speed. If then obstruction appears in front of the vehicle and affects photo-electric cell d, relay g switches a coil h in and cuts off engine ignition coil b. The valve s, Fig. 2, is operated by the core of the solenoid and the vacuum cylinder or cylinders x operate brakes or a fender or both. The valve s is locked in operated position by a catch s<SP>1</SP> adapted to be released by a control s<SP>3</SP> operated by the driver when the emergency has passed. A suitable expansible fender comprises a number of bars interconnected by a collapsable mechanism of crossed link 5, Fig. 3 (not shown).
