553,944. 2-Ketogluconic acid. HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE, Inc. July 5, 1941, No. 8518. Convention date, July 8, 1940. [Class 2 (iii)] 2 Keto-gluconic acid is produced by fermenting a carbohydrate mash containing glucose or a carbohydrate which yields glucose, or a gluconate salt with bacteria of the genus Pseudomonas, a number of species of which are mentioned. The mash is aerated and agitated, causing the bacteria to grow in a submerged state. Aluminium or glass apparatus may be used. Examples are given.
