Abstract

553,895. Grinding and polishing machines. JORDON, A. T., and LEVER, P. June 24, 1942, No. 8666. [Class 60] A machine for grinding or polishing the plane or curved surfaces of optical glass comprises rotary spindles each carrying a grinding &c. head, or a work holder, and means for traversing the spindles relatively to a non- rotary part carrying the work-holders, or grinding &c. heads, in two directions at right angles to one another and to the spindles at unrelated rates whereby a complex motion is effected which repeats only after many cycles. As shown, the machine comprises a number of spindles 12, Fig. 8, carried on brackets 11 pivoted on the two longitudinal members 10 of a carriage 5, Fig. 3, which rides on rollers 6 and is oscillated across the main frame by means of a crank 8. The brackets 11 have arms 13 linked by rods 14 each including a slotted plate engaged by a crank on a cross shaft. By these means the spindles, which are rotated from longitudinal shafts 18, 19, are oscillated in directions at right angles to each other and to themselves. Fig. 10 shows a work holder for a prism 49 which is gripped between jaws 40 formed with pins 53 co-operating with a bracket 50 secured to a main frame girder 3 and having hooks 52 engaging the pins 53. A clamping device 55 engages the pins and bears against pins 54 on the bracket. The prism is engaged by face members 42, 44, the latter being mounted on a spindle 43 having bores 46 for the reception of a locking pin 47. The lap 61 is carried by a crank 60 and may be driven round therewith or rotate thereon. In Fig. 11 workpieces are carried by holders 64 mounted on cranks 66 on the spindles and bear against stationary laps 65, rotation of the work being prevented by trunnions 67 engaging slotted arms 68. A similar arrangement may be employed for polishing spherical surfaces. One or both of the translational movements may be applied to the non-rotary parts.
