Abstract

553,008. Cutting and severing tape. BAGPAK, Inc. Dec. 30, 1941, No. 16784. Convention date, Oct. 1. [Class 31 (i)] Relates to mechanism for closing the mouth of a filled bag by a line of stitching, and sealing the closure by applying a folded adhesive tape. According to the invention, the tape is severed, after it has been applied to a bag, by an oscillatable blade which is actuated by an electromagnet and devices controlled by a cam. The tape is applied to a succession of bags as they are carried through a closing machine, which may be of the type described in Specification 415,279, [Group VII]. After the application of the tape, the mouth of a bag C, Fig. 4, travels through a channel 6, and the front end of this channel is provided with a shearing anvil 7, Fig. 9, across which a depending shearing-blade 9 is oscillated periodically to cut the tape between successive bags. The blade is attached to a shaft 8 to which a tilting-bar 13, Fig. 4, is also attached. Above the bar 13 is a lever 21 which is attached to a shaft 18 and is rocked periodically by an electromagnet 26, the lever normally being held in its raised position by a spring. Crossed arms 36, 37 are pivoted on the lever 21 and their lower ends are drawn together by a spring 53. The upper ends of the levers are provided with rollers 44 which embrace cam surfaces 50 formed on the sides of a pendant bar 49 pivoted at its upper end to the casing. The lower ends of the bars 36, 37 terminate in slots 43 each adapted to engage a stud 14 on the ends of the bar 13. In use, when the electromagnet is energized. the arms 37, 38 are drawn downwards and one of the slots 43 engages a stud 14 thus tilting the bar 13 and causing the cutter 9 to sever the tape. The engagement of a slot 43 with a pin 14 causes the upper ends of the bars 36, 37 to move the came 49 to one side, and this movement together with the separation of the ends of the bars by the cam surfaces 50, moves the disengaged slot 43 clear of the rising pin 14. Operation of the electromagnet is controlled by an arm 59 which makes contact with the bags as they move through the machine.
