Abstract

552,441. Ammunition cartridges. YODER, H. O. May 5, 1941, No. 5817. Convention date, May 6, 1940. [Class 9 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] Cartridge cases for shells &c. are produced by making a tubular body from strip stock, for example as described in Specifications 438,790, 439,105 and 440,472, [all in Group XXII] and uniting it to an end or base produced separately as by forging. Strip from a coil 2B, Fig. 1, is fed by rollers 2a through a succession of means (not shown) that form the strip into a close jointed tube electrically welded at 3a. After passing from seaming means (not shown) the tube is sized and trued at 4, straightened at 5 and cut into blanks at 6. The blanks are trimmed and faced to length between opposed cutters 8, Fig. 7, and then necked in dies and if required flanged at the base end. The bodies are assembled on the forged bases 11, Fig. 13, together with a ring 13 of brazing material such as copper wire for completion of the joint by heating. The rings are made by coiling wire on a mandrel 14, and cutting off individual coils at 15, Fig. 16. The ring 13 may be assembled on the outside of the body. In a modification the base 17, Fig. 23, is formed with a channel to receive a flange 16 and the joint is made by turning down the flange 18 either in dies or by rolls 20. The joint is completed by brazing, after a forging operation to reduce the flange to standard dimensions. In a further modification the body has an intumed flange and the base an inner flange that is swaged down on to it prior to brazing. In a further modification the end of the body is upset at 22, Fig. 27, and the base is formed with a downturned flange 23b. After assembly this flange is brought back to its normal position and the upstanding inner flange is swaged to the form shown in Fig. 30, the joint being completed by a copper wire 13 and brazing as before. The brazing may be effected by passing the cartridges on end on an endless conveyor through an electrically heated furnace into a cooling chamber with water-cooled walls. Both furnace and chamber have a hydrogen atmosphere and the entrance to the furnace and the exit from the chamber are sealed by overlapping reducing flames.
