Abstract
552,089. Coating flexible material. TULL, A. G. May 21, 1941, No. 6487. [Class 140] A machine for producing lengths of flexible base coated with a photographic colloid layer, more particularly for experimental purposes, comprises top and bottom rollers adapted to support and traverse the flexible base, in the form of an endless loop, in a mainly vertical direction, the top roller serving to chill the coating, and means to apply the coating to the outer side of the loop during traverse. The loop may be formed wholly of the base or may be partly constituted by a leader strip. As shown in Fig. 1, the base 8 is supported bv upper and lower rollers 9, 10 and coating material is applied thereto by a roller 11 dipping into a trough 12. Either the trough or coating roller may be heated. The roller 10 is driven and cooling-water is circulated through the roller 9 ; additional cooling may be effected by a water tank 26 fitting the roller 9. The coated base may pass through a heated drying chamber 13 through which air is circulated by a fan 14. The trough 12 is supported by arms 35 and is forced upwardly by a spring 36 to an extent limited by a micrometer stop 37. Tension is applied to the base loop by a spring 19 acting on levers supporting the roller 9 ; or by a jockey roller 20. The roller 9 may comprise an outer shell surrounding an inner shell through which water is circulated. In a modification, the rollers 9, 10 are supported in brackets from one side of the framework and the drying chamber is furnished with a hinged door, whereby the coated base can be withdrawn in loop form. In a further modification, the roller 10 dips into a trough of coating liquid.
