Abstract
551,657. Wheel tyres. FIRESTONE TYRE & RUBBER CO. July 10 1941, No. 8730. Convention date, Dec. 19, 1940. [Class 144 (ii)] The production of an electric static charge by the friction. of a tyre tread on the road surface and the consequent radio interference or liability of electric schock to passengers is prevented by the use of a pneumatic tyre provided with a conducting member between the wheel rim and the tyre tread. As shown in Fig. 1 the tyre comprises the tread 13, plies 14 extra tread plies 15 and beads 16. Positioned around one of the beads 16 is a special chafer strip 17 containing an electrically conducting rubber composition. The strip 17 touches the rim 11 when the tyre is inflated and contacts an inner conductor wall 18 of the tyre terminating in the face of the tread 13 beyond the shoulder 19. An outer wall 20 is provided. Instead of a continuous inner conducting wall 18 one or more conducting strips may be provided. Fig. 4 shows the inner conducting wall 18c emerging nearer the centre of the tread. The conducting material may consist of rubber composition having included therein a highly conductive carbon black such as an acetylene black. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to French Specification 793,507 and British Specification 544,757.
