Abstract

550,562. Treating materials with liquids. MUNTERS' INDUSTRI AKTIEBOLAG. June 6, 1941, No. 7178. Convention date, June 6, 1940. [Class 15 (i)] [Also in Groups VIII and XIII] Multiple-ply impregnated paper sheets for heat insulation or corrugated board for boxes &c., are made by arranging paper sheets 1, 2, Fig. 1, to form units having internal openended passages, drying the paper if necessary, soaking with asphalt, bitumen, &c., dissolved e.g. in trichlor. ethylene or carbon tetrachloride or as an aqueous emulsion and removing such liquid carrier by circulating air &c., through the passages.of the units. The sheets 1, 2, may be adhered initially as by water-soluble and or heat drying adhesive applied at spaced points 3. As illustrated in Fig. 5, a number of such pads of material are stack ed in rows and tiers with spacing grids in a metal basket 4 allowing free flow of impregnant which is pumped at 20 from a reservoir 18 heated at 47 as by steam, via a valve 21 into an impregnating chamber 13 having a lid 14, an air-circulating conduit 26 with fan 28 and heater 29, an air inlet 48 with a heater 49 and valve 55, and an overflow conduit 25. A conduit 34, 35 in parallel with part of the conduit 26 allows part of the circulating air to be cooled at 33 so that condensed solvent may be returned to a container 15 for mixing with fresh asphalt, provision also being made for some of the air to escape at-31 after solvent vapour has been condensed at 37, 38 and absorbed by active charcoal &c. There is also an air outlet 43 controlled by a valve 44.. In operation after the insulating material has been soaked and drained, hot. air circulation is started to blow out excess impregnating liquid to evaporate most of the solvent, whereupon the valve 55 is opened and heated fresh air drawn in to evaporate the remainder. Alternatively a flap valve 56 may be closed, and finally a damper 46 closed. In modifications the insulating units may be dipped in a separate receptacle or in a receptacle underneath the chamber 13 instead of pumping liquid up at 20.
