Abstract

<PICT:0922502/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0922502/IV(a)/2> <PICT:0922502/IV(a)/3> <PICT:0922502/IV(a)/4> A bonded web of textile fibres is produced by continuously rotating a single perforated cylindrical wall 16, continuously forming a web of fibres on the wall, agglomerating the web by a binder, drying the web on the wall and removing the dried web from the wall. Fibres are deposited on an endless belt 42, fed by rollers 43 to a spiked cylinder or picker 44, raised by a duct 45 on to a rotating, perforated cylinder 48, divided and dispersed by a picker 49 and a brush 50 and deposited to form a web n1 on the wall 16 by air issuing through a grid 31, the air being continuously circulated through a duct 41 by a fan (not shown). A hot or cold liquid containing a binder is supplied by a pump 69, Fig. 2, to a jet 57 which sprays it on to the portion n2 of the web. A fan 61 creates suction in a casing B2 and air is discharged at 63. The liquid flows to hydraulic seal 65 whose overflow flows through a wire netting 68 into a tank 67 and is recirculated. The air withdrawn from the casing B2 may be recirculated so as to return to the web fibres or binding powders, granulated cork or active charcoal incorporated therein. Air or gases pass through a chamber 77 containing tubes 80 through which combustion gases pass from a burner 79 in a chamber 78. The heated gases pass from a casing C1 through the web n3 to a casing C2 and are recirculated by a fan (not shown). Infra-red radiators may be positioned in the casing C1. The web is separated from the wall 16 by a strip 83 or by compressed air, passes between rolls 84, 85 and may pass between cooled rolls to impart a uniform thickness thereto. The wall 16 is cleaned by compressed air supplied by perforated tubes 89 and by rotary brushes 90. A felt strip 92 or brush deposits oil, grease, wax or varnish having a silicone base on the wall 16 to prevent adhesion of the web thereto. In a modification, Fig. 4, two different types of fibre are fed into two casings 94, 95 from pickers 98 to form a laminated web. In a further modification, Fig. 5, to form a web comprising outer layers p, q and an inner layer r preferably constituted by cork or active charcoal, the cork is fed from a hopper 101 through a metering device comprising a rotating disc 104 to a chamber 116 and deposited on the layer p.
