[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug 25, 1941.] [Class 100 (ii)] In a postmarking or like machine the impressionroller is actuated by a mechanical relay comprising a pair of frictionally-driven discs which are tripped intermittently under control of a feeler actuated by the letters. In the mechanism shown in Figs. 1 and 3, a trip-arm 3 in the path of the letters is connected to a vertically-movable rod 19 by means comprising a link 8 and yieldingly coupled bell-cranks 10, 12. The rod 19 is connected to another verticallymovable rod 51 which is mounted in a rocking tube 52 provided with an arm 65 having yielding connection 32 with a lever 22 for, raising an impression-roller M into engagement with a printing-roller S. An arm 64 on the tube carries a mechanical relay comprising a shaft 63 which is driven continuously through a friction-coupling 61 by a shaft 62. The shaft 63 is provided with a pair of discs 56, 57, each having three teeth which alternate with the teeth of the other disc. A cam 59 on the shaft 63, and rollers 58 carried by the discs co-operate intermittently with a pair of driving- rollers arranged at opposite sides of the relay. The rod 51 is provided with a locking-tooth 55 for co-operating with a tooth of the disc 56 or 57. When a letter rocks the trip-arm 3, the tooth 55 is moved from the disc 56 to the disc 57, the shaft 63 turns through one-sixth of a revolution, the relay rocks the arms 64, 65, and the impression-rollers moved into engagement with the printing-roller. When letter-feed stops, the trip-arm 3 is raised by a pring 15, the rods 19, 51 are returned, the tooth 55 re-engages the disc 56, the relay returns the arms 64, 65, and the impression-roller is separated from the printing-roller.
